Bridgewater Eagles Athletics

Bridgewater College women’s soccer celebrates after winning their first ever ODAC Championship over Washington and Lee.

Bridgewater, Va. – Bridgewater College athletics had an action-packed week — which saw a coaching change, a first-ever conference title and a continuation of an undefeated season.

Women’s Soccer

The #2 Lady Eagles upset #1 Washington and Lee 0-0 (4-2) in a shootout to win their first ever ODAC Championship on Sunday, April 11. Senior goalkeeper Sydney Davis had five saves in her final game with BC, earning her the United Soccer Coaches Division III Women’s National Player of the Week award

BC made all four of their shootout kicks, with junior defender Emily York, junior midfielder Hanna Randolph, first-year forward Skyler Daum and junior defender Lindsey Winkels shooting past W&L junior goalie Grace Coombs. 

The Generals could have forced a fifth kick, but first-year midfielder Louisa Bynum’s shootout kick hit the post to seal their first and only loss of the season. The Eagles concluded the 2021 season 10-1-1 (6-1), while W&L ended 10-0-1 (7-0).

Baseball

The Eagles went 4-0 this past week. BC beat visiting EMU 6-5 on Tuesday, April 13, took a high-scoring affair at Ferrum 13-10 on Thursday, April 15, and swept a doubleheader at Guilford, 15-3 and 13-6, on Saturday, April 17. 

Senior infielder Kevin Navedo had two home runs on Saturday, one in each game. The Eagles moved to 10-8 (9-7), and will travel to Shenandoah on Wednesday, April 21 at 4 p.m.

Softball

BC’s double header at Randolph for Wednesday, April 14 was postponed. 

The Eagles fell 2-1 and 7-4 to Emory & Henry in a home doubleheader on Saturday, April 17. Junior second baseman Torie Shifflet went 3-4 with three RBIs and two runs scored in game two. 

BC fell 7-1 and 2-1 in a double header at Pfeiffer on Sunday, April 18. Their next game will be a double header versus Randolph Macon on Tuesday, April 20 at 3 p.m.

Field Hockey

BC fell 11-2 at Shenandoah on Tuesday, April 13 in the ODAC Quarterfinals to end the season 4-6, 4-5 in the ODAC. Senior midfielder Karinne Moyer had a goal and an assist in her final game for BC. 

Head coach Allyson Kenyon announced on Thursday, April 15 that she will leave BC to become head coach at Lycoming College, ending an 18 year run with the Eagles. She will be replaced by former assistant coach Gina Stephan.

Volleyball

BC went 3-0 this week, defeating Lynchburg 3-1 at home on Senior Day on Thursday, April 15 and sweeping an ODAC Tri-Match vs. Guilford (3-0) and Randolph (3-0). 

The Eagles moved to 6-4 (overall and in the ODAC) and are now in sixth place. They will end the regular season Wednesday, April 21 at home against Emory & Henry at 6 p.m.

Women’s Lacrosse

The Eagles went 1-1, beating Virginia Wesleyan 14-6 on Wednesday at Jopson Field, and falling at home 14-12 against Ferrum on Saturday. The Eagles will travel to Washington and Lee Wednesday, April 21 at 4 p.m.

Men’s Lacrosse

BC fell 20-8 to #5 Lynchburg at home on Saturday, April 17. Senior attacker Eric Husselbaugh had three goals in defeat for the Eagles. BC is now 2-4, and will host VWU on Wednesday, April 21 at 5 p. m.

Women’s Tennis

BC went undefeated, winning 9-0 at Ferrum on Monday, April 12 and 7-2 at Guilford on Saturday. 

The shutout was the second of the season for the Eagles, who moved to 8-0 overall and 7-0 in the ODAC, tied with Lynchburg for first place. Bridgewater has won 11 of 12 matches dating back to the 2020 spring season. The Eagles will host Lynchburg on Monday, April 19 at 4 p.m.

Men’s Tennis

The Eagles split two matches this past week, beating visiting Hampden Sydney 7-2 on Tuesday, and falling 7-2 at Guilford on Saturday. 

Junior Canon Secord stayed undefeated in singles, beating junior Tyler Brice 6-1, 6-0 on Tuesday, and taking a three set match against junior Joe Horne, 6-1, 3-6, 6-0 on Saturday. 

BC will end the regular season Monday, April 19 at home against Ferrum at 7 p.m.

Women’s Golf

BC finished third in the VSGA Intercollegiate Championship on April 12 and 13 with a total of 685 strokes. Sophomore Savannah Scott had 85 strokes on day one and 80 strokes on day two to finish seventh overall in the tournament. 

The Eagles will compete in the ODAC Championship Sunday, April 25 and Monday, April 26.

Men’s Golf

BC was 19 over par to finish third at the Hampden Sydney Invitational April 17-18. The Eagles had a total of 595 strokes. Freshman Jake Girouard led BC for the weekend with a total of 148 strokes, 76 on Saturday and 72 on Sunday. 

The Eagles will hope to win the ODAC Championship April 25 and 26.

Women’s Track and Field

The Eagles won a total of three events at the Dennis Craddock Invitational on Saturday. 

Sophomore Cassidy Oliver won the long jump at 5.42m/17’9.50″ — which was also the fourth best in BC history. First-year Kylah Gray won the triple jump at 10.46m/34’4″and junior Kacee Hooker took the 200 meter dash with a time of 25.36. 

The Eagles will return to action April 30-May 1 for the ODAC Outdoor Championships.

Men’s Track and Field

BC finished the regular season at the Dennis Craddock Invitational on Saturday. 

Junior Christopher Atkins was runner up in the 400 meter dash with a time of 49.42 — the sixth fastest in BC history. Sophomore Peter Fulton placed second in the discus throw at 46.82m/153’7″ — the second best throw in Bridgewater history. First-year Easton Repko had a 3.80m/12’5.50” pole vault to finish third. 

BC will be off until the ODAC Outdoor Championship April 30-May 1.
