Bridgewater, Va. – BCAllies met to discuss and inform members of the club about pronouns at their weekly meeting on Oct. 22. BCAllies selects topics to discuss by using upcoming holidays or general interest from the members.

National Pronoun Day was Oct. 20, and the meeting focused on certain pronouns and who would use them.

“This meeting we talked to our attendees about pronouns and the importance of them,” said junior and president of the club Garrett Estep. “We wanted to help them understand when to use them and how to use them.”

Pronouns are used in place of a proper noun most often when referring to someone without using their name.

“Pronouns are important to a lot of people in the LGBTQ+ community, but are commonly misunderstood outside of the community, specifically when it comes to using they/them or with a change in pronouns,” said junior and vice president of the club Abby Gaver.

She/her and he/him are a few commonly used pronouns, but there is also a they/them pronoun. Using this pronoun when referring to someone can help prevent misgendering them.

“It’s easy to say a quick apology, and decide to be done with it, but misgendering someone can often be harmful,” said Gaver. “We discussed how to take accountability for these actions, and what to do in order to improve. It’s things like this that we feel are important to remind others about in order to build a peaceful and accepting community.”

Upcoming events for BCAllies include the community trick or treat. The organization will be dressed in costumes at a table on the campus mall on Thursday, Oct. 28. The event is set to start at 6 p.m. and last until 7:30 p.m.

Friday, Oct. 29, for Aesexual Awareness Week, BCAllies plans to discuss aesexuality and they encourage anyone who is interested in learning more or in joining the club to attend the meeting. This Friday’s meeting is set to start at 5 p.m. in McKinney 126.
