Bridgewater Wins One out of Two

Softball Picks Up Win and Loss on Senior Day

Bridgewater, Va. – Bridgewater’s softball team secured a huge conference win in the second game against Emory & Henry on Saturday April 13, who had only lost three times in conference play all season. The Eagles, with that win, moved to 9-9 in conference play, putting them in fourth place heading into the ODAC tournament with only two games remaining.

In Game One, Bridgewater scored 3 and Emory & Henry scored 10. Emory & Henry got off to a flying start when freshman pitcher Anna Thomas hit a two RBI home run. The Wasps added a third run later in the inning when junior third baseman Courtney Herron advanced a player across home plate to make the game 3-0.

The Wasps were in cruise control in the second inning when they added another run on an RBI double and scored two more runs in the fourth inning bringing the score to 6-0.

Freshman shortstop Kaitlyn Tirona got the Eagles on the board in the bottom of the fourth with a homerun which was the third of her career.

Bridgewater added two more runs in the fifth inning. Senior third baseman Victoria Gontarz hit an RBI single which sent freshman second baseman Torie Shifflett home and freshman center, Sarah Wimer, to third base. Wimer crossed home plate on an RBI single from senior outfielder Lindsey Talley when she sent the ball up the middle to make it 6-3 for the Wasps.

Emory & Henry scored in the top of the seventh inning on a sacrifice bunt to make it 7-3 before sophomore first baseman Kendall Varner smashed a three run homerun. The homerun made the score 10-3 to the Wasps and secured the win in game one.

Gontarz, Wimer, Shifflett, Tirona and Talley all produced one hit for the Eagles.

Senior pitcher Carolyn Campbell started the game for the Eagles and allowed five hits and three runs before being replaced. Freshman pitcher Emily Clifford stepped in and allowed eight hit and seven runs to see out the rest of the game.

Game Two saw Bridgewater at 2 and Emory & Henry at 1. All three runs in this game were scored in the first inning. Emory & Henry’s Varner hit her second home run of the day putting the Wasps ahead 1-0.
