BRIDGEWATER, Va. – The Bridgewater women’s soccer team won on their home field against Mary Washington, by a score of 3-1 thanks to a late effort led by Laura Narby.
The first goal of the game was not scored until the 50-minute mark. When Mary Washington’s Amanda Dolan passed to Katie Britton who found the back of the net to make the score one to zero.
The Eagles scored three unanswered goals after Mary Washington’s first goal.
“We are a team that is not going to quit until the final whistle,” Narby said.
All three of Bridgewater’s goals came within six minutes of one another. Bridgewater’s Laura Narby started the scoring streak in the 79-minute, scoring unassisted, by a shot that was taken near mid field.
“I got to watch Laura Narby score a goal from about 40 yards out, which was something that you don’t usually see in soccer,” Bridgewater fan Ashton Smith said.
In the 83rd-minute, Bridgewater’s forward Lyric Birkley found Narby who scored Bridgewater’s second goal of the match with her head. Narby’s second goal gave the Eagles their first lead of the game.
Immediately after, in the 84th-minute Birkley scored the Eagles third goal, assisted by Kendall Garza.
“Those six minutes where we scored those three goals, it was insane,” Narby said, when asked what it felt like to score two of the three goals for the Eagles.
“The atmosphere shifted, with the fans yelling and screaming once we scored the goals,” Smith said.
According to Bridgewater’s athletic website, Mary Washington took 17 shots while Bridgewater took ten, both teams had seven shots on target. Bridgewater managed to save six of those seven shots, while Mary Washington only saved four.
Bridgewater gave Mary Washington their first loss of the season. According to Mary Washington’s athletic website, the Bridgewater Eagles have now beaten Mary Washington three straight years in a row.
“They are always a good opponent, they always test us, but it makes us better in the end,” Narby said, when asked how she viewed Mary Washington as an opponent.
The Eagles next match will take place on Saturday, Sep. 13 as they will face off against the Salisbury Sea Gulls. The game will be played in Bridgewater.
