Bridgewater, Va.- On Oct. 21, DC’s “Black Adam,” starring Dwayne Johnson as Teth Adam, was released in theaters. Despite its high audience rating, movie critics did not agree with the public.

What’s New?

  • The movie follows the origin story of Teth Adam becoming the Black Adam, and his mantle of being the god and protector of the city of Kahndaq.
  • “The story telling stood true to the character, and did not nerf him, or play down the role he plays,” said senior Amere Langley. “He was more of an anti-hero, rather than a hero that is saving people. He is going to kill people that do not deserve to live.”
  • In the movie, it is revealed that Teth Adam was not the one who was given the powers of Shazam by the council of wizards. His son Hurut Adam was given the powers of Shazam by the council of wizards, but then gave it to his father to save his life.
  • After his son was killed by assassins of King Ahk-Ton, Teth Adam used the powers of Shazam to take revenge on King Ahk-Ton. This led him to be imprisoned by Bar Shazam for abusing the powers of Shazam and almost destroying the city of Kahndaq.
  • The Justice Society of America, which consisted of Hawkman, Cyclone, Atom Smasher and Dr. Fate, was deployed by Amanda Waller to capture Teth Adam to prevent him from destroying Kahndaq.

Why it matters

  • Before the film aired in theaters, verified movie critics from Rotten Tomatoes rated the movie at an average of 40%, with the majority of bad reviews and criticism about Johnson’s portrayal of Black Adam.
  • However, audience members on Rotten Tomatoes did not think the same as the critics, rating the movie at an average of 90% with positive reviews and comments for Johnson’s performance.
  • “Rotten Tomatoes is good to look at, but the critics look at movies from a certain perspective that I wouldn’t be as frank to look at. I don’t look at those reviews before I go to the movies,” said Langley.
  • In an interview on “The Tonight Show” starring Jimmy Fallon, Johnson explained that his role of portraying Black Adam has been a passion project that has been in the works for over a decade.
  • “I have always been a DC and Black Adam boy growing up, and this has been a passion project of mine. Just yesterday I got sent the original article announcing me playing Black Adam, 15 years ago,” said Johnson.

What is ahead

  • For anyone interested in watching the film, DC’s “Black Adam” is currently in theaters.
