Jury Trial set for BC Shooter Suspect
January 17, 2023
Bridgewater, Va.- The jury trial for alleged Bridgewater College shooter Alexander Wyatt Campbell is scheduled for April 22, 2024.
Campbell is accused of the Feb. 1 shooting that took the lives of Police Officer John Painter and Safety Officer J.J. Jefferson.
He faces five different charges, including two counts of aggravated murder of multiple persons, aggravated murder of a law enforcement officer, murder in the first degree and the use of a firearm in a felony.
The 10-day jury trial date was set during a hearing on Jan. 6, 2023; previous court dates in 2022 were in February, October and November.
The 10-day jury trial will take place at the Harrisonburg Rockingham District Court nearly two years and four months after the shooting.
“The legal process often takes time,” said Chief of Campus Police Milton Franklin. “Though it requires our patience, I’m confident that justice will be served for officers Painter and Jefferson, their families and all of us impacted by that day.”
The news of a jury trial date being set comes just weeks before the one-year anniversary of the shooting.
“I have mixed feelings about the anniversary coming up,” said senior Kaci Pitsenbarger. “It brings up the trauma we all experienced as a community, but it also shows us the family aspect we have emphasized at BC with supporting one another over this past year. I will admit that how I view BC is a lot different now than almost four years ago.”
For many Eagles and community members, strength, love and support are the most important focuses ahead of the one-year anniversary.
“As we approach February 1, our hearts and mind remain strong, BC STRONG, in support of one another and reverence to the loss of our dear friends, Officer John Painter and CSO JJ Jefferson,” said Franklin. “I am so appreciative of the love and support locally and nationwide shown to Bridgewater College.”
