BRIDGEWATER, Va. — The Bridgewater baseball team picked up a pair of wins in a home doubleheader Saturday, March 21, sweeping Virginia Wesleyan behind strong pitching and timely hitting.
“Two wins in conference play is huge for us,” pitcher Cam Nuckols said. “We don’t really look back too much, we just look forward and take it one game at a time.”
The Eagles opened the day with a decisive win in Game 1 before completing the sweep with another solid performance in the second game, extending their record to 17-3 in the season.
Bridgewater set the tone early in the opener, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead and maintaining control throughout. The Eagles jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring twice in the first inning behind RBI efforts from Zack Chadwell and Jakson Walter.
After Virginia Wesleyan managed its lone run on a wild pitch in the third, Bridgewater extended the lead with key hits from Nick Stavros and Bransen Hensley. A four-run surge in the final innings, highlighted by Jake Harris’ two-run single, sealed an 8–1 victory. Strong pitching from Nuckols and the bullpen kept the Marlins quiet, securing the Eagles’ win in game one of the doubleheader.
In Game 2, the Eagles carried that energy into another complete performance. After building an early advantage, Bridgewater continued to add insurance runs while limiting Virginia Wesleyan’s offensive chances. The pitching delivered again, led by Evan Bert, who marked his fifth win of the season pitching seven full innings on six hits, two earned runs, two walks, and six strikeouts.
Virginia Wesleyan scored first, but Bridgewater responded with five runs across three consecutive innings to take control. Key contributions included a sacrifice fly from Bransen Hensley and a two-run home run by Bryce Suters, helping the Eagles build a 5-1 lead. Suters later added an RBI single as Bridgewater extended the margin to 6-2. The Marlins scored three runs in the ninth, but Andrew Baugher secured the final outs to preserve a 6-5 win for the Eagles.
“We’ve got a veteran group that’s been here and done that before,” Coach Ben Spotts said. “The message is to trust the process, focus on the day and not look too far ahead.”
According to D3Baseball.com the Eagles are ranked 14th and with the sweep, Bridgewater heads to Winchester Virginia for an ODAC matchup against 19-3 Shenandoah University Hornets.
