BRIDGEWATER, Va. – Bridgewater College Baseball used a late-game surge to defeat non-conference opponent Marymount University 10-5 on Tuesday, April 14.
“We were able to cash in with runners on base at the right time,” Head Coach Ben Spotts said. “Take advantage when you can get them, and it worked out once we got in that big seventh inning.”
The Eagles, ranked No. 7 in the American Baseball Coaches Association poll, improved to 27–6 overall and 9–6 in conference play with the win.
Both teams started fast, with the Saints scoring at the top of the first on an RBI double. The Eagles responded quickly in the bottom of the first when senior first baseman Zack Chadwell hit a two-run home run to take a 2-1 lead.
The Saints answered back with two runs in the second inning and one run in the third inning to take a 4-2 lead heading into the bottom of the fourth. Senior right fielder Trent Holland hit the Eagles’ second two-run home run of the day, tying the game 4–4 in the fourth inning.
The seventh inning was the game-changer the Eagles needed. After surrendering an unearned run on a throwing error to fall behind 5–4, Bridgewater responded with a surge of offense. The Eagles capitalized on timely hitting and patient at-bats, stringing together three 2-RBI doubles to bring in six runs in the bottom of the seventh. The rally shifted momentum completely, allowing Bridgewater to pull away and secure the 10–5 victory.
“It’s another good team, got to show up and play every day,” Holland said was their mindset coming into the matchup. “Everybody’s got each other’s back, all we can do is keep playing good baseball.”
Spotts said he told his team to stop chasing pitches and stay more disciplined at the plate, an adjustment that paid off during the decisive seventh inning as the Eagles worked deeper counts and found quality pitches to hit.
The Eagles will host nationally-ranked University of Lynchburg for a doubleheader on Saturday, April 18.
