BRIDGEWATER, Va. – As students begin to wind down from a long and stressful semester, they have begun to get in the Christmas spirit by hanging out with friends and enjoying Christmas movies. But which one is the best?
Of the top ten movies of all time, according to IMDB, all of them came out in 2003 or earlier. But, after talking to students around campus, the majority said their favorite movies did come from the past.
“‘The Grinch’, the live action version, is definitely my favorite Christmas movie,” senior Max Bondurant said. “Jim Carrey was really good and it was funnier than the animated version. It has turned into a comfort movie for me around the holidays.”
Bondurant wasn’t the only one who agreed that the live action version was better.
“If I had to choose between the two movies, the live action is much better in my opinion,” said freshman Liam Collins. “The dog is funny and always has me laughing.”
Collins also weighed in on his favorite movie. “My all time favorite Christmas movie is ‘National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation’,” Collins said. “It is an all time classic and I have to watch it at least once every year.”
While those movies may seem like obvious Christmas movies, not every movie around the holidays is recognized as a Christmas movie. A small group of 10 people were asked if they thought ‘Die Hard’, starring Bruce Willis, was a Christmas movie or not. Of the ten, 7 said yes while the other 3 said no.
“I think any movie that takes place during the holiday season is a Christmas movie,” junior Jack Thome said. “Not to mention, it’s an absolute classic, so I think it should be considered a Christmas movie.” Thome also mentioned that his favorite Christmas movie is ‘Home Alone.’
Sometimes, it does not matter what movie is on, rather it is about grabbing a cozy blanket and hanging out with family that makes it a good movie.
“I enjoy a lot of Christmas movies, so it is hard to say which is my favorite,” junior Julia Bellis said. “‘Home Alone’, ‘Santa Claus’ and ‘Rudolph’ are some of my favorites though if I had to choose one.”
As students begin to return home to family and friends, they will enjoy the comfort of movies that many of us have watched our entire lives. From ‘A Wonderful Life’, ‘Elf’, ‘The Polar Express’ and many other classics, there is nothing like a good Christmas movie.
