HARRISONBURG, Va. — James Madison University defended its home court on Saturday night, February 7th 2026, defeating Toledo 73 to 71 in a tightly contested MAC SBC Challenge matchup at the Atlantic Union Bank Center.
The game was close from start to finish, with both teams tied at 32 at halftime. Neither side was able to create much separation early, as strong defense and balanced scoring kept the score even heading into the break.
“From my perspective, the biggest factor in securing the win was our ability to stay composed and trust our system,” volunteer coach Tanner Shulman said. “Even when Toledo made runs, our guys never panicked and kept executing on both ends of the floor”
Cliff Davis led the way for James Madison, scoring 18 points in a strong offensive performance. The Dukes sealed the game in the final moments when Justin McBride knocked down a crucial free throw with about 20 seconds remaining, giving JMU the narrow two-point advantage that ultimately held.
Toledo battled throughout the game and kept pressure on the Dukes until the final possession. The Rockets tied the score several times and stayed within striking distance late but were unable to convert in the closing seconds. “What stood out most was our execution late. The players stayed calm, made smart decisions and knocked down key free throws. That level of composure in a tight game is what ultimately secured the win,” he said.
Fans inside the arena felt the intensity of the matchup. JMU went on that big run in the second half. You could feel the entire arena come alive and it felt like the momentum completely flipped in the Dukes favor. “The energy in the arena was incredible during the final minutes. Every defensive stop and every basket had the crowd on its feet. It was one of the loudest games I have been to,” he said.
He added that the team’s poise under pressure stood out most. “What impressed me most was how confident and controlled the team looked down the stretch. They stayed calm, made big plays when it mattered and showed they can handle pressure in close games,” Harris said.
The victory improved James Madison’s home record and gave the Dukes a strong showing in the MAC SBC Challenge, an interconference series between the Sun Belt and Mid American Conference.
