BRIDGEWATER, Va. – After gaining momentum with a win at Averett University on Feb. 7, the Bridgewater men’s basketball team fell to the Virginia Wesleyan Marlins, 79–60, suffering their 10th conference loss of the season.
The Eagles cut the deficit to two points at 39–37 before the Marlins used a 12–0 run to extend the lead to 49–37 with 13:48 remaining in the second half.
“We understand that we have to be a lot sharper, focus on our reps and things like that during practice and how to get better as the season goes on,” senior guard Maleek Richardson said.
The Eagles have averaged 65 points per game this season, while their opponents average 74 points per game, according to BC Athletics.
Junior guard Jahmir Brown of Charlotte, North Carolina, led the team in scoring with 13.3 points per game, as well as in steals (23) and assists (45). He scored 17 of the team’s 60 points and added six rebounds.
“It was a big jump from high school to college, getting adjusted to the 3 point line, faster pace, bigger guys,” freshman guard Chris Suber said.
Suber has appeared in 19 of the 23 games this season, and has started in four. According to the 2025-26 Men’s Basketball Cumulative Statistics, he ranks second amongst his team with 17 total steals.
“Taking it a game at a time, especially in the ODAC, every team is dang near ranked,” Suber said. “We just got to play together and play for each other and rebound.”
After eight total minutes of playing time in tonight’s game versus Virginia Wesleyan, Suber said he has to be “more of a pest defensively” and also “get my guys more involved.”
The loss Wednesday evening dropped the Eagles to 7-15 on the season and 3-10 in the ODAC, putting them into second to last place in the ODAC standings.
The two remaining games are against 16–6 Washington and Lee, who are fourth in the ODAC, and nationally ranked Randolph–Macon (20–2 overall, No. 6), who lead the conference standings.
