Bridgewater, Va.- The Eagles set a new record for most points scored in a single game. The previous record was set in 2007 against Guildford, where the score was 76-28.
Bridgewater College’s football team won 80-0 over Southern Virginia on Saturday, Sept. 14, during Family Weekend and set a new school record for the most points scored in a single game.
The game started at 2 p.m. This was the first home game of the season, and the team did not disappoint its fans with their first win of the season. The Eagles won the opening toss giving them possession of the ball first, and within the first five minutes the first touchdown was scored by sophomore Wyatt Jervis.
“It was very surreal to have the first touchdown of the game especially after not playing in any games last year. I just was not expecting them to call my name in that moment for that opportunity but I’m very grateful for it. I’ll remember that one forever,” Jervis said as he talked about how he felt having the first touchdown.
In the first quarter, there were four touchdowns, a five-yard run by Jervis, an eight yard pass and sixteen yard pass by senior Cedric Drumgoole, and a nine yard pass by graduate student Jamel Johnson. Later in the game, Jervis went on to make another touchdown in the second quarter. There were a few others who also got touchdowns throughout the game, such as juniors Evan Welsh and Brendan Robison, senior Donald Brooks II and sophomore Bradyn Horacek, each contributing to the success of the Eagles.
“I had a good feeling coming into the game that we were gonna win by a large number. I definitely was not expecting that number to be 80 but we played at a high level and the scoreboard showed that,” said Jervis talking about how he felt the team did playing the game.
In the third quarter, senior Aaron Moore scored a touchdown, making the score 59 points against Southern Virginia. “Beating a team 80-0 is always going to feel good, especially when you hold them to 0. I had an interception and touchdown.” Moore goes on to say, “I’m looking forward to having a good season with a good group of guys and chasing an ODAC championship,” said Moore, the Eagles safety.
Senior Jack Hendren is a kicker for the Eagles and he had nine extra points, tying the record for fourth most points earned in a single game. Hendren kicked for all but two touchdowns throughout all quarters of the game, each time scoring an extra point for the Eagles. The last two were kicked by sophomore Augustin Miguel.
The last touchdown of the game, making the score 80-0, was scored by junior Shalin Green, who plays defensive end. “Scoring the touchdown felt surreal because it’s not often someone at my position would score, but to also get a pick six made it even more memorable” said Shalin as he talked about his touchdown.
Shalin went on and said, “Some of the highlights from the game were my pick six, but also the other two picks since I was on the field and watched as it happened.”
Head Coach Scott Lemn talked about the game and highlights for the team and said, “Teammates were excited for each other’s success and I would say the defensive touchdowns helped keep the enthusiasm up.… I think those defensive scores helped to keep focus until the end of the game. It being our first home win was really big for us and the way we celebrated with the bell was a lot of fun.”
Homecoming weekend is coming up on Oct. 12, 2024, with a game against Averett. Last year, the Eagles won against Averett 23-16. The game is set to start at 2 p.m.
